CHICAGO– There is one week to go in one of the country’s most comprehensive Eurocentric cinema event, the 21st Chicago European Union (EU) Film Festival at the Gene Siskel Film Center. It wraps up with Closing Night on Thursday, April 5th, 2018, screening “The Young Karl Marx,” directed by Raoul Peck (“I Am Not Your Negro”). The film, which acts as a superhero origin story for a geopolitical philosophy, is the closer for the four week fest, which began on March 9th.

“The Young Karl Marx” is set in 1843, in a period when Europe was in upheaval, with revolution and politics at the forefront. Karl Marx (August Diehl) is a journalist, whose ideas are stirring the debate in his travels, to keep ahead of his creditors. His wife Jenny (Vicky Krieps) supports his writings, and the possibility for spreading his philosophy is also facilitated by a benefactor and partner, Friedrich Engels (Stefan Konarske). There will be a separate showing before closing night, click here for more information.

The Gene Siskel Film Center is part of the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, and presents film festival celebrations (including the EU Fest and the Black Harvest Film Festival), restorations, cutting edge new films and discussions/filmmaker appearances with many screenings.

The 21st Chicago European Union Film Festival runs through April 5th, 2018, at the Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 North State Street in Chicago. For a list of their films for the upcoming month of April of 2018, click here.
